Finding Moments That Stand For Something Larger
Chad Moore writes about how photographs don’t capture moments, but unlock memories and emotionsconnected to a moment.
Maira Kalman’s illustrations of shoes, people napping under trees, and other slices of the everyday show how an individual perspective can layer meaning on the mundane.
Discovering these moments requires careful attention, like in Thich Nhat Hanh’s exercise of thoughtfully eating a tangerine.
In Scriptnotes Episode 397, writer Andrea Berloff talks about how ambient sound plays a role in storytelling:
“Figuring out what rooms sound like and what environments sound and how that informs character has been an incredibly fascinating learning process for me. I have three main characters in my movie and they’re all at slightly different economic levels. So what would one person’s apartment sound like versus another person’s apartment? Would a slightly wealthier person’s apartment be quieter than somebody who is poor?”
Along those lines, Scottish artist Siôn Parkinson collects and catalogs workplace sounds to preserve the ambient noise of people’s lives for future generations.
Highland How-To: You Too Can Use To-Dos
Highland 2 lets you make checklists, but you can extend this to turn your outline into a writing to-do list.
Use [ ]
to create an open checkbox. Add an x to mark it as complete: [x]
You can extend this into the sidebar Navigator for a quick glance at what you need to do in your document.
Create a named Marker, either with the keyboard shortcut (^ ⇧ Shift M) or the menu command Tools > Insert Named Marker.
In the marker, after the colon, type a note for yourself starting with an open checkbox. It’ll look something like
{{%m: [ ] Name this character.}}
Click the eye icon on the bottom of the Navigator and make sure you have Markers turned on.
In the Filter bar, type in
[ ]
Now your sidebar only shows you the tasks you have left in your document!
