The Comparing Mind & Unseen Work
Former Mythbuster Adam Savage answers a viewer question about the way he designs a build, and whether one way of working is any better than another.
Inside his answer is another answer: Even in describing and explaining his creative process, he still edits out a lot. Creating is editing.
The Drafts You Don’t See
Before their films were camera ready, many screenwriters slogged through drafts that never saw the light of day:
There were drastic differences between the first draft of Back to the Future and the movie that spawned two sequels.
M. Night Shyamalan spoke with Creative Screenwriting about how The Sixth Sense changed over multiple drafts from a story of racing to track down a serial killer to a supernatural quest for redemption.
Greta Gerwig remembers a 350 page draft of Lady Bird that was never intended to be shot, but helped her figure out what story she wanted to tell.
The Safdie Brothers kept rewriting Uncut Gems not just to get the story right, but to tailor it to which real-life basketball player would act in the film.
How I Highland: Luis Miles
Writer and TV Director Luis Miles likes writing in Highland, but he needed a multi-column format for scripting a documentary. Instead of jumping over to another word processor and messing with tables, Luis asked the question “Can I do this in Highland?”
Over at his blog, Luis explains how he uses the Stage Play template to lay out a documentary style A/V script.
Have you found any interesting tips or tricks in Highland? Let us know, and we may feature you in a future How I Highland segment!
Other Cool Things
Wikipedia has a good list of fictional companies, but it can be better. Wikipedia editors, this is your time to shine!
This week, with the passing of Apollo 11’s Michael Collins, our thoughts turn skyward. Toby Ord has a set of digitally restored photographs of Earth as seen from outer space, including shots taken by Collins.
In 1995, a Neo-Luddite met with an editor from Wired magazine and made a $1,000 bet on if technology would lead to a complete societal collapse by the year 2020. We’ve lived through the year, so who won the bet?
And that’s what’s inneresting this week!
