Depicting Kindness
As a counterpoint to stories that privilege a grim, pessimistic take on the world and the people in it, this week we’ve got examples that value kindness.
Looking at a character who models behaviors that make for a great boss (and a good person), Maureen Ryan shares her thoughts on Ted Lasso.
At Bright Wall/Dark Room, Ethan Warren writes about The Straight Story, David Lynch’s G-Rated Disney movie, and its quiet, moving depiction of penance and the kindness of strangers.
There are plenty of moments of kindness and connection at the blog Thirty Second Friendships. Start here with this story of two mothers meeting at a mall while neither of them are there to shop.
Putting More Kindness Out There
Over at Metafilter, someone asked “What’s a good habit (act of courtesy or kindness) that you picked up from someone else?” The answers they received may give you some ideas to try out.
Eric Krebs, writing for Reasons to be Cheerful, interviews Jeremy Frimer from Stanford University’s Polarization and Social Change Lab about research suggesting polite politicians are more popular, and how kindness is a strong political strategy.
Matt Zoller Seitz shares a lesson learned from Roger Ebert about the importance of not waiting for “the right moment” to let people know they matter to you.
Before the Awards, Read the Scripts
With the Oscars coming on Sunday, there’s still time to take a look through the nominated scripts before knowing who the awards go to! Weekend Read has a collection of over 20 scripts for nominated films for you to check out (along with selections from previous award seasons)!
Visit our site to find out more about Weekend Read and how to download it for your phone.
Other Cool Things
Web Urbanist lets you know how to keep an eye out for building facades that hide infrastructure.
From Lists of Note, a 1927 memo from the Motion Picture Producers and Distributers of America with “Don’ts and Be Carefuls” for what you shouldn’t include in your screenplay.
With the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, let’s remember the gift that keeps on giving: Baron Zemo’s dance moves.
And that’s what’s inneresting this week!
