Let's talk about faces.
Inneresting has a new logo courtesy of Dustin Bocks. It’s a reworking of Jubliat Black, a typeface I don’t think I’d ever seen before.
It’s a new typeface that feels old, which seems to be all the rage this week.
MailChimp, the service through which I send this very email, switched out their headlines to Cooper Light, which reminds me a lot of my Letraset sheets of Souvenir.
Younger readers may not know that for a significant period of the pre-laser printer 1980s, these sheets of scratch-on lettering were the go-to choices for making your newsletters and zines.
For MailChimp, I can see the virtue in keeping it weird, I guess, but the new typeface is still kind of jarring.
On Saturday, I had VanLeeuwan’s ice cream for the first time. The vegan Rocky Road is delicious. Their logo is fake-vintage hipsterdom at its best-worst.
To finish up this conversation on new and familiar faces, let me urge Hollywood to find a way to cast Adam Scott and Travis Tope as related. I'm not sure if they're brothers, separated clones or father and son, but the universe demands that they somehow be teamed up.
Here’s what else I found interesting this week:
Modern Monetary Theory is a term I’d heard but didn’t really understand until this episode from Planet Money.
Shit happens. I was so repulsed by the trailer that almost didn’t watch season two of American Vandal, but Franklin Leonard said it was even better than season one. Having just finished it, I can assure you he’s right. It’s less funny but better paced, and really sticks the landing. (“We’re not the worst generation, just the most exposed.”)
Mapping conversation. At parents' night, my daughter's history teacher described the Harkness method to lead and track in-class discussions. I'm pretty sure this app is what she's using.
Never give up, never surrender. I have a 700-day streak on Duolingo in French. I'm just bragging, basically.
Just a random number of zeroes. That site that purports to show celebrity net worth? It doesn’t have anything beyond guesswork to back it up.
Envy is what you can’t admit you want. This blog post by Austin Kleon links to a bunch of other articles on jealousy’s fancy cousin.
And that’s what’s interesting this week. See you next Wednesday!
